Steve Small
KIPP Team & Family Schools

Steve serves in the role of Co-President of KIPP TEAM & Family Schools, a charter school management organization that manages KIPP New Jersey and KIPP Miami.  He served as KIPP TEAM & Family’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) from 2006 through 2010, and as CFO from 2010 through 2024. As Co-President Steve is responsible for the Finance, Talent, KIPP Forward, Data, and Technology functions of the organization. Since Steve joined KTAF the organization has grown from 1 to 19 schools. During this time he has overseen the expansion of the annual operating budget from $5 million to $285 million as student enrollment has grown from approximately 300 students to more than 10,000. He has also led the successful financing of over $500 million in charter school real estate development projects.

Before joining KTAF Steve spent six years at J.P. Morgan in New York City, working as an analyst and a sales trader in the Private Bank. Steve holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and a M.A. in Education Policy and Administration from the University of Michigan, as well as a B.S. in Finance and a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Scranton. He is a graduate of the Broad Residency in Urban Public Education, a member of the Finance Committee of the national KIPP Foundation Board, and the Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair of the New Jersey Public Charter Schools Association Board.
